Knowledge of word formation is a central aspect of linguistic competence. In Universal Grammar (UG) there are many modules and has lexicon and morphology as one module. Though this can be considered as a separate module in UG, it interacts with other modules of the grammar. Hence morphology could not be dealt in isolation, but in relation with other modules such as phonology, syntax and semantics. The phonological, syntactic and semantic dimensions of the word have to be considered in dealing with morphology. Here I will examine the relation of morphology with the three modules and go on to discuss how this relation holds in morphologically rich languages such as Indian languages and how this relation could be exploited in computation. |
